*******************Urgent Plea**************************
We need your help. Beginning with the pandemic, and now the recession of 2022, we have all dealt with and/or are dealing with difficult times in one way or another. It has affected our rescue in ways that we never imagined, too. Our goal has always been to rescue dogs that would be euthanized if we didn’t step in and find each of them a wonderful, furever home. Unfortunately, our rescue is at a crossroads. Financially we are unable to keep going without more donations. We have always had savings as well as a Home Equity Line of Credit(HELOC) to fall back on to make it through the tough times, both for the rescue as well as our store, but this year particularly has emptied everything we had as a back up. The three mothers and their puppies, and two dogs being returned to us after they had been adopted, were more than we expected physically, emotionally and financially, coupled with many of our customers choosing to buy their dog and cat food elsewhere. The loss of the income from the customers who stopped shopping with us, along with the extra expenses, has drained everything we have.
We appreciate all of the people that have donated funds over the past few years as well as those of you who have continued to buy food from us, but we need your help with donations more than ever. Where do we stand right now: As of November 1st, 2022 we have a credit card bill of $7,900 that is due in one week. In addition, we have another $4,000 in credit card expenses that will need to be paid next month and a Care Credit bill of $3,000. How will that be paid?
As mentioned earlier, we have had savings and a HELOC to help us in times that we didn’t get enough donations. We also had our for profit business, Pawsitively Pampered Pets, as a fall back in case things got difficult. To be honest, we never expected to get enough donations to handle all the expenses that the rescue would incur, but we had our backup. What we didn’t expect was the “perfect storm” of veterinarian bills for sick mothers and puppies and inflation affecting prices on dog food, utility bills, and all other prices. When we couple that with our store’s retail business getting cut to a quarter of what it was prior to the pandemic, we have found ourselves in a place we never expected to be. We either have to shut down the rescue as well as our grooming salon and store, or get enough donations to keep us going.
From the beginning we wanted to rescue dogs and get them into a new home. Since 2019 we have rescued 119 dogs. For two people, with no staff, no building other than our home, and very few volunteers until the last few months, we did a great job. Going in, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy and that not every dog would be adopted, so we made the decision that our home was theirs forever, if need be. For that reason, we had to be selective about how many dogs and what dogs we could rescue and who to adopt them out to. We didn’t want to rescue a dog because someone said they might be interested in it. That never works out well and we were asked to do this many times. In that time period, were we selective enough? Unfortunately, we had far more dogs returned to us than we would have liked. In fact, we had two dogs returned to us after the owners had them for two years. That was hard to fathom. One dog lasted four hours. That was the shortest. We had another dog returned after one day from Alabama. Yes, that’s the state of Alabama and an eleven hour drive one way. We had one dog that got returned three different times. The first two times the adoptors kept her a week or two. The last adoptor would have kept her if she wasn’t pregnant. Pregnant????? We had no clue that she was pregnant when we rescued her. She delivered six puppies within a week after we got her back. Her, three of her puppies, and two more of the dogs listed above are living with us now.
When it comes down to it, all of these dogs have been rescued and are in a much better situation than when we found them. We are capable of handling dogs and we are determined to make it work, but we can’t do it alone. Our personal resources are gone and we have many more dogs than most people can imagine that require our full attention. It’s hard to imagine that we had a goal to be able to rent, or better yet, purchase some property and put a structure on it and have that as our rescue. Unfortunately, that decision may be completely out of our hands and placed in yours. The future and potentially the lives of all of these dogs are at stake. Please help and thank you from the bottom of our heart!!!

All of our personal dogs have been rescued, but in February of 2019 we started “Operation Breakout” by rescuing dogs, mainly from Rowan County Animal Shelter, but from some other places as well. The Rowan shelter is continually inundated with dogs that are dropped off. This shelter is a kill shelter and typically will euthanize a dog within a week to two weeks, yet they are almost full at most times. To see more from their shelter, click the link below these pictures.
2020 was a very interesting year for everyone due to Covid-19, but it was even stranger for all the dogs that we have rescued. During our Covid Closure, as I call it, we had all kinds of people showing interest in our dogs and we have found permanent homes for many of our rescues. However, recently there has been a change.
The dogs that we are currently rescuing are requiring a lot more individual attention and are more difficult to find their forever home. That won’t stop us, but we are finding it financially more difficult than in the past. What we are asking from you is to look at the pictures that we are adding on a regular basis. If a dog seems to be of interest to you, click the image and read the information about the dog. If you feel as if you can provide a good forever family for him/her, please fill out an application at the bottom of this page. If adoption isn’t a possibility, please consider donating to our nonprofit.
We are constantly updating these pictures to include some of the new dogs as well as dogs that we’ve had for a while. Not only are we a rescue, but we are also an orphanage for dogs who cannot find someone to adopt them. These fur babies will remain with us and we will be their forever home. That’s why we need your help!!! Thank you.
